Microsoft Surface to be Wi-Fi Only for Now

Microsoft Surface tablet was recently unveiled amidst much hype but a recent report says that the tablet will be Wi-Fi only, at least for now.

This means that for the time immediately after its launch, Surface will feature only Wi-Fi connectivity and not 3G or 4G.

According to the report, Microsoft wants to keep the door open for a 3G/4G Surface in the future. But for now, it may prove to be a drawback for the company as Surface is pitted against many popular tablets, including Apple’s iPad which now offers 4G connectivity as well.

However, Microsoft may be pleased to know that the Wi-Fi only iPads are the ones that are most favoured by mainstream consumers and it is rare for most of them to use it outside Wi-Fi hotspots. Meanwhile, the 3G/4G iPads are not sold in large numbers.

Microsoft needed to make a major move to popularize the Surface tablet not only in workplaces but also at homes. A Wi-Fi enabled Surface tablet will ensure that Microsoft manages to achieve this.

What many people forget is that with the USB connectivity that Surface has, you can hook up your hotspot devices and phones to it to act as a modem! No need for it to come with it…besides with a full blown PC at your finger tips in a tablet, why would I want to risk running my data plan into ruin?
