For those of you who have been waiting for the Windows 8 tablets to release, your wait will end soon. Reports have come in saying that the Intel-based Windows 8 tablets are expected to be launched in retail stores in November.
Microsoft is on a tight schedule since it the tablets will not only be based on a brand new OS (with the Metro interface no less!), the OS will have to support around 5 different architectures – 3 ARM, 1 Intel and 1 AMD.
What’s more, it doesn’t stop at just tablets. Over 50% of the over 12 designs are expected to be hybrid device, giving the functionality of not only a tablet but also of a conventional laptop with a physical keyboard.
All these devices will be based on Intel’s upcoming “Clover Trail” Atom chip. The Clover Trail is Intel’s very first dual-core Atom design based on its 32-nanometer process technology.
Hybrid Windows 8-based devices powered by the higher-performance Ivy Bridge processor are also in the pipeline.
Like Windows 7, Windows 8 will run on chips from Intel and AMD, which will enable it to run older “legacy” applications.  chips Windows 8, like Windows 7 before it, will be powered by chips from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices and will be able to run older, so-called “legacy” applications.
Microsoft will also release a separate version, called Windows RT, which will run on devices powered by ARM chip suppliers like Qualcomm, Nvidia and Texas Instruments. However, RT will not allow any older “legacy” Windows applications to be run.
Intel is rumoured to be working on a new chip called “Bay Trail”, based on 22-nanometer technology, succeeding Clover Trail. The new chip will offer plenty of built-in security features and will come with Infineon [3G/4G] silicon inside. Bay Trail is also expected to use Intel’s own graphics technology, rather than that of Imagination’s. However, there is no word on when the Bay Trail chip will be launched.
