If you just bought a Nokia Lumia 800 or 710, or if you’re eagerly awaiting the Lumia 610, you’re in for a bit of bad news. You won’t get to enjoy Windows Phone 8 or “Apollo” this year.
According to a Microsoft insider, when Microsoft launches the Windows 8 OS for phones this year, “Apollo” won’t be available for existing handsets running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, including HTC Titan and Radar, Samsung’s Omnia W and the Nokia Lumia series. Users of these phones will probably be stuck with “Mango” this year.
Terry Myerson, Corporate VP of Windows Phone, had said that although Windows Phone 8 has not been announced yet, Microsoft wants all Windows Phone 7 apps to run on the newer Windows Phone 8. He added that “Application compatibility is always something, where there’s always stuff on the fringe”
It is very strange that there is no definite indication of existing Windows Phone handsets being upgradable to Windows Phone 8.
So our advice is that if you happen to be thinking of purchasing a Windows Phone handset, wait till the year-end to safely buy a Windows 8 handset rather than purchasing a Windows Phone 7.5 handset now and being stuck with “Mango”.
